Where do I start?

I am a returning non-meta player. I would like to start playing modern meta and other formats. I have been a collector of the cards for many years but let my understanding of meta fall off. I do miss the older style of play; but I think the multitude of combos and effects that yugioh provides is an interesting game. My issue is there are so many archtypes and combos, etc. that I feel rather overwhelmed. I tried to play a few rounds on Master Duel and YGO-O and my performance was poor. Thanks for any advice!
